How To Read
Why do we read? What is it about this simple pleasure that remains so appealing even though there are so many forms of entertainment available to us? Reading seems to embody something fundamental about being human. Despite much-trumpeted predictions about ‘the death of the book’ throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, reading remains in a state of robust good health. And yet, despite early experiences of enchantment that we experienced hearing stories read to us or mastering them ourselves, many of us share the sense that we could get more out of our adult reading. This session provides solution for getting more out of our reading lives. It explores contemporary reading ailments - from the sheer proliferation of fiction and non-fiction that that we face to the pressures imposed by ourselves or others. And asks how we can make better decisions about what, and what not, to read.
