Deep Talk with Emilie Wapnick - "How to be Everything"

Emilie Wapnick in conversation with Karoline Rütter – German Version below

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” This seemingly harmless question, which we are often asked as children, is meant to inspire us to dream. When you do finally “grow up”, reality tends to look differently, as author Emilie Wapnick knows so well. To this day, she would love to answer this question with: “Everything!” But this doesn’t seem to be accepted by society.

We are conditioned to follow one specific career path and to specialise by conforming to the “10.000-hour rule”. If you want to explore topics as diverse as law, film production and music – like Emilie Wapnick herself” – you are pushed into choosing just one. If this dilemma sounds familiar to you, perhaps you, too, are a “multipotentialite”? In other words, a person whose diverse interests cannot be encompassed by one career term?

Emilie Wapnick encourages all of those with diverse interests and talents not to let themselves be constricted by standardised career ideas, but to live out their diverse aspirations in a self-determined way: Either in parallel or gradually, in different phases of life.

“How To Be Everything” is the title of Emilie Wapnick’s award-winning book. And in conversation with the author and TED speaker, we would like to explore the equally diverse “superpowers” of the “multipotentialites” and learn how one can practically fulfil different career aspirations in one lifetime.

The event will be held in English.
