Jeremy Heimans On New Power
Our world seems to be sliding into chaos. Polls failed to predict a Trump victory. Airbnb is worth more than Hilton. #MeToo is taking down powerful, previously untouchable heads of industry. But behind the chaos, there is an underlying force at work – ‘new power’.
GetUp! co-founder Jeremy Heimans will join The School of Life in Sydney to share his provocative book New Power, co-written with #givingtuesday founder Henry Timms. New Power lays out the most important skill of the 21st century: the ability to harness the energy of the connected crowd, for better or worse.
How has new technology changed power dynamics in our modern world? Can we use hyper-connectivity in a way that creates equity and openness not division and discord? Does new power give power back to the people, or merely make them more vulnerable?
Heimans will be sharing a new framework for understanding power in the 21st century. Those who flourish will be those best able to channel participatory energy — for the good, the bad, and the trivial. This is a battle that will have massive implications for people, organisations, and for the world at large.
This revolutionary presentation will challenge all of us to think about the values we hold and how we can all be part of building a more open, equitable and participatory world.

'Perhaps the most encouraging trend is that, through technology, people are realising how much agency they actually have.'
