A Night of Better Conversations: Relationships

Our lives are so often filled with superficial talk, from office chitchat to commentaries on last night's television. How can we have conversations that inspire us to think in new ways, that stimulate our curiosity and that prompt us to say things we've never said before? A Night of Better Conversation has been designed to help us enjoy rich and memorable conversations about things that really matter in life, inspired by the ideas of great thinkers and philosophers.

The night will be broken into theory and practice. You will begin by learning a specific technique for better conversation and then invited to practice the technique with other people focusing on the theme of Relationships.

At The School of Life, we prefer to understand conversation not in terms of tactical strategies for achieving our wants (whether it be seduction or making money) but as the primary way we engage in relationships and can thereby enhance our existence. We aim to take a fresh look at conversation, enabling us each to assess the lenses we have brought to it in the past and to discover fruitful ways to develop our conversation.

A Night of Better Conversation is a chance to engage with minds moulded by forces different to our own, and to go beyond our comfort zone by taking risks in what we are willing to share.

'Conversation is a meeting of minds with different memories and habits. When minds meet they don't just exchange facts: they transform them, reshape them, draw different implications from them, engage in new trains of thought.

Conversation doesn't just reshuffle the cards; it creates new cards.'

—Theodore Zeldin

ABOUT SPECIAL EVENTS

Special events are unique experiences designed to explore themes in greater depth, outside of the classroom. Often in collaboration with cultural partners, leading writers, economists, historians, philosophers, psychologists, artists and other thinkers, special events offer provocation, inspiration and consolation in the form of advice for living better. Session formats will vary depending on the subject.

TSOL is a safe, community space for the exploration of significant human concerns. Some of these concerns are of course of a deeply personal nature and if you feel negatively affected by any content or conversations then please approach our faculty member or host who can provide support and guidance.
