Philosophy Salon: Buddhism
Join us for a social night of cheese, wine – and philosophy with Philosopher Dr Tim Dean on Buddhism.
Buddhism is both a global religion and a philosophy of great depth and insight. It originated in India nearly 2,500 years ago with the teachings of Siddhārtha Gautama. Buddhism has since spread around the world and diverged into a variety of schools of thought – from Tibetan Buddhism, to Zen in Japan, to India’s philosophical Madhyamaka school. Buddhism might be an ancient philosophy, but it contains many timeless teachings that are just as relevant to living a good life today.
In this Salon we will look at Buddhism’s core teachings on how to liberate ourselves from suffering, along with concepts like no-self, impermanence, karma and the practice of meditation. We will also look at Buddhism’s impact on how we think about the mind, reality and the limits of knowledge, and how many of the core teachings of Buddhism have been vindicated by modern science.

ABOUT PHILOSOPHY SALONS:
Each Philosophy Salon is hosted by a contemporary philosopher and explores the big ideas of key thinkers and traditions from today and throughout history. The series includes philosophers from a wide range of periods, schools of thought, geographical regions and backgrounds. Over the course of the two-hour session you will be presented with a biographical background of the philosopher and will be given an opportunity to discuss their key ideas over wine and cheese. This Salon will be hosted by Dr Tim Dean, a philosopher and writer at the University of Sydney with a PhD in the evolution of morality and an interest in ethics, critical thinking and Eastern philosophy.
