How To Develop Self-Knowledge
In Ancient Greece, the philosopher Socrates famously declared that the unexamined life was not worth living. Asked to sum up what all philosophical commandments could be reduced to, he replied: ‘Know yourself.’
Self-knowledge is important for one central reason: because it offers us a route to greater happiness and fulfilment. It is only with an accurate sense of who we are that we can make reliable decisions - particularly around love and work.
Unfortunately, this type of self-awareness is devilishly hard to acquire. Our minds are hugely skilled at hiding truths from our conscious grasp, and squeamish about ideas that challenge our existing views of ourselves. It can therefore take dedicated time, and external guidance, to overcome these obstacles and begin to understand our true selves.

Brandon Srot is a psychotherapist who dedicates his professional life to developing human potential and connection. His Sydney-based consultancy offers a suite of services in psychotherapy, leadership development and facilitation, allowing him to work with a wide range of individuals, couples, groups and organisations that seek change and transformation. Brandon brings over 15 years of professional service and senior leadership experience to his work. He is a faculty member of the Masa Leadership Centre in Israel and is the Chief Facilitation Officer of the LaunchPad Australia Retreat. Brandon is a Senior Fellow of the Schusterman Fellowship, a graduate of the Nachum Goldman Fellowship and was the recipient of the inaugural Jewish Changemaker Award. He also works with criminal offenders through Corrective Services NSW, is an endorsed sexuality and gender diversity trainer and is a former pro bono therapist for the Aids Council of New South Wales (ACON). Brandon holds qualifications in counselling, human change and Gestalt therapy and has completed trainings in embodied leadership, adaptive leadership and facilitation in the USA and Australia.
Sophi Bruce is a learning designer, facilitator, coach and social researcher. She joined TSOL Sydney as a core faculty member in 2015 and teaches across the public and business curriculums. Sophi currently holds senior roles with the University of Technology Sydney and Adaptive Leadership Australia working with a range of people and contexts that focus on thinking differently, leadership impact and adapting to change. She has enjoyed a varied life and career across two sides of the globe and has a First Class Honours degree and Masters in Communication. Sophi is inspired by the wisdom and progress that comes from purposeful and stimulating interactions. She teaches ethics to primary school children, sings in a local community choir and has a penchant for travel and music festivals. She has authored a range of research reports on leadership, social impact and digital futures and regularly contributes to articles and forums on resilience, self-care and purpose. She remains proud of her teenage-self coming first in a short story competition judged by Roald Dahl.
