Writing As Therapy (3hr)

When we suffer it can be hard to think straight. When we can’t think straight it is hard to find relief from our suffering. Writing requires us to think straight. Through writing we can find relief from suffering. Of course it’s not quite as simple as that – but almost. Through writing we can find the ‘story’ within our ‘situation’ and take more control of that story.

Writing is a tried and tested method for coping with and understanding personal crises, depression, anxieties, stress and traumatic events. It helps us to gain distance from the things that cause us distress. From keeping a daily diary to embarking upon a memoir - from flash fiction to a full-length novel – all forms of writing can help us to shape narrative from chaos.

In this three-hour session Sian will encourage you to dip your toes in the healing waters of therapeutic writing, using a variety of techniques and exploring the methods that might work best for you.

No experience necessary and grammar, spelling and writing ability are irrelevant. All participants need to bring is an urge to express themselves, resolve personal dilemmas, a journal (or notepad) and a pen. If you prefer to type please feel free to bring a laptop or iPad. There will be class activities but everyone's writing material will be kept as private as participants wish.

'I understand better now how much of writing… is about self-examination, self-transformation'
– Jonathan Franzen

Dr Sian Prior is a writer, broadcaster and teacher of creative writing. She has been an ABC presenter, an Age columnist and her first book ‘Shy: a memoir’ (Text Publishing) was published in 2014. In it she examines her lifelong struggles with social anxiety and the techniques she developed to overcome her fears.

Leading writers, economists, historians, philosophers, psychologists, artists and other thinkers offer provocation, inspiration and consolation in the form of advice for living better. Speakers for this strand have been invited by The School of Life to present their own material. Session formats will vary depending on the subject.
