Writing As Therapy

When we suffer it can be hard to think straight. When we can’t think straight it’s hard to find relief from our suffering. Writing requires us to us to think straight. Through writing we can therefore find relief from suffering. Of course it’s not quite as simple as that – but almost. Through writing we find the story within our situation and take more control of that story.

Writing is a tried and tested method for coping with and understanding personal crises, depression, anxieties, stress and traumatic events. It helps us gain distance from the things that cause us distress. From keeping a daily diary to embarking on a memoir – from flash fiction to a full-length novel – all forms of writing can help us shape narrative from chaos.

In this three-hour session Sian will encourage you to shape your own narrative through therapeutic writing, using a variety of techniques and exploring which methods work best for you.

No experience necessary and grammar, spelling and writing ability are irrelevant. All participants need to bring is an urge to express themselves, resolve personal dilemmas, a journal (or notepad) and a pen. If you prefer to type, please feel free to bring a laptop or iPad. There will be class activities, but everyone's writing material will be kept as private as participants wish.
