The Serious Business of Playfulness

Playfulness is serious business. It helps us connect to one another in an authentic way, recover from high-stress situations, enjoy our job more and remain curious about the world around us. While we can do without play in the short-term, if we deny ourselves play over our lifetime, we can lose our optimism, our sense of pleasure and our lives can begin to feel mechanical.

In this two-day workshop we will explore the biology and neuroscience of play and why this apparently ‘purposeless’ activity serves a very important evolutionary role. We will discover why, after our basic needs of survival are met, humans are hard-wired to spontaneously play. We will learn how to integrate different types and states of play into our lives in order to regain perspective, build on our creativity and develop a stronger sense of self.

In this two day workshop, we will:

-       Explore the science and history of play;
-       Discover our play persona;
-       Re-think our personal notions of success, time, leisure and idleness;
-       Consider the role of play in our relationships;
-       Practice using play to generate creative ideas;
-       Learn ways to make our daily routine more adventurous and playful.

Daniel Teitelbaum is an educator and freelance producer. Previously he was Head of Content at The School of Life in Australia and prior to that made up part of the strategy team at Small Giants. Daniel spent his younger days in youth leadership and informal education, running weekly programs and seasonal camps for primary and high school children for youth led organisations, where he learnt first hand how important play is for healthy emotional and intellectual development.

Dara Simkin considers herself a play pioneer and supports professionals, entrepreneurs and change-makers with finding more connection, innovation and creativity in their work. A true kid at heart, she believes play is something we should never lose. She is in the business of transcending the work-play dualism, to make room for purpose and mastery in the workplace. As a facilitator, she brings a unique energy and enthusiasm to create a safe, supportive and playful space. Dara studied communications and theatre and has a background in marketing and event management.
