Turning Pain Into Art with Mari Andrew

Writer, illustrator and Instagram sensation Mari Andrew joins The School of Life for an exclusive and intimate hands-on workshop in learning how to turn your pain into art.

Making art is a tried and tested method for coping with personal crises, depression, anxieties, stress and traumatic events. Being lost in the flow of creation can be a great salve to a wounded soul, as well as helping us make sense of the insensible. From doodling in a notebook, visiting and viewing beautiful pieces of art in our local museum to creating your own masterpiece – all forms of artistic expression can help us to shape a narrative from the chaos.

In her first visit to Australia, Mari Andrew (@bymariandrew), joins The School of Life for a very special and intimate workshop to help us turn our pain into art. In this hands-on workshop, Mari will help us explore art therapy techniques and exercises to self-soothe, focus on the good, find humour in the horrific and confront our fears head on through the healing medium of art.

In this exclusive workshop you will:

-       Hear Mari’s personal experience of pain and loss and how art helped her to heal
-       Learn techniques to channel emotion into your work
-       Try exercises and reflection prompts to help get your brain thinking in new ways before you create
-       Learn practical and easy drawing techniques for self-discovery
-       Explore and take control of your pain through your art
-       Embrace vulnerability, humour, beauty, melancholy and levity
-       Have the opportunity to connect with Mari face to face in an intimate group setting

No previous drawing experience or artistic practice is necessary for this hands-on workshop. All workshop materials, light refreshments and a signed copy of Mari Andrew's debut book, Am I There Yet? are provided on the day. All participants need to bring is an urge to express themselves, resolve personal dilemmas and any materials you are comfortable using with you on the day. There will be class activities but everyone’s art will be kept as private as participants wish.
