Sarah Sentilles On Art as a Weapon

How is one to live in the face of so much suffering? What difference can one person make in this beautiful, imperfect and imperiled world?

Writer, critical theorist and scholar of religion Sarah Sentilles explores how art can restore our dignity and humanity in the face of violence and suffering.

While it is widely accepted that art is very important, it is not often understood why, or how it might help us with the often-difficult task of being human.

In this unique conversation, we ask American author and critical theorist Sarah Sentilles how art helps us to live with and recover from violence.

In her recent non-fiction work Draw Your Weapons, Sarah Sentilles challenges conventional thinking about how violence is waged, witnessed and resisted. She makes a case for art as a ‘weapon against weapons’ and helps us to see and feel the strength of the human spirit that lies in our responses to the horrors of war and violence.

With art and violence as our focal point, this evening conversation is a chance to explore some of the profound human questions raised in Sarah Sentilles work, including:

  • Why does art have a deeply humanising effect?
  • What impact can one person have in a violent world?
  • How does art offer us hope?

We will leave with a deeper understanding of art as an agent of hope and social transformation, as well as having the opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals.

Whether you are an artist or a firm believer in the power of art to transform our lives and our world, join The School of Life for this timely and essential conversation.
