Osher Günsberg On Vulnerability

Join The School of Life and Dumbo Feather for a special evening with television personality and author Osher Günsberg as we explore the part of ourselves that is often the most difficult to express – our vulnerability.

Most of us are aware of the importance of authenticity. We’re told from a young age to ‘be true to yourself’ and that our friends and family will be there for us ‘no matter what’. Yet somewhere along the way, to some degree, the story we hear ourselves telling becomes the story we want others to hear rather than the story that truly reflects our reality. Understandably, we do this to protect ourselves from embarrassment, judgement or worst of all, an admission of failure. We fear exposing the deepest and most flawed parts of ourselves because we think no one would ever understand and could not possibly relate to the anxieties and fears we live with.

Renowned television host Osher Günsberg’s story is one of anxiety, addiction and dangerous thoughts riddling his life behind the scenes, while his ego kept up appearances and the cameras kept rolling. Connecting with his vulnerability personally as well as on a very public stage, in the midst of deep mental and bodily disconnection, was a slow and continuing journey of relearning his fundamental truths.

How closely aligned is the story we tell others about who we are and the story we live internally each day? What does it take to accept and embrace vulnerability enough to merge those stories into a whole, more authentic and complex life?

From his public persona as host of ‘reality’ TV shows The Bachelor and Australian Idol, to the true reality of a deeply traumatic mental health journey, join Osher Günsberg as he shares his raw insight into our connection as humans through the power of vulnerability.

This event is co-curated and presented in partnership with our friends at Dumbo Feather, a quarterly print magazine, website and podcast of conversations with extraordinary people.

About Osher Günsberg

Osher Günsberg is one of Australia’s most recognisable media personalities, his career spanning the past two decades. From his work on Channel [V] in the early 2000s to seven seasons co-hosting Network Ten’s Australian Idol, Osher became the first Australian to host live network prime time television in the USA on CBS’ Live To Dance. Currently, Osher hosts Network Ten’s The Bachelor Australia, The Bachelorette Australia and Bachelor In Paradise.

In 2016 Osher joined the board of SANE Australia as a director, in an effort to help change attitudes in our society about complex mental illness. He published Back, After the Break (Harper Collins, 2018) detailing his journey through anxiety and depression, removing stigmas and helping others recognise when they, or their mates, need help.
