As our careers develop and progress, it’s almost inevitable that we will take on a role involving more leadership. It comes as a reward for our hard work, but one that also requires a big shift in our responsibilities and required skills: without the right preparation, it can be a challenging transition.
Getting it right can be difficult, but appropriate training offers an important advantage, and the risks associated with ineffective leadership can be critical. Numerous studies and surveys suggest that poor management is a primary contributor to low productivity and employee disengagement, with one piece of research estimating that weak leadership can account for anywhere from 9% to 32% of a company’s voluntary turnover.
At The School of Life our focus on Emotional Intelligence allows us to get to the psychological core of what authentic, effective management requires. Leadership tends to amplify our weaknesses as well as our strengths, which is why our approach takes a thorough look at the emotional roots of our behaviour to help make sense of how we behave. Without an authentic leadership style, we run the risk of losing touch with what made us great at our work, and of alienating those we manage by adopting a leadership style based on our past experiences of authority rather than our own true personality.
In this workshop we will:
- Reflect on what distinguishes a great leader from a merely capable one.
- Explore how our personal histories have shaped our assumptions.
- Consider our strengths and blind spots and how they are likely to affect others on our team.
- Address key leadership challenges from the need to create a compelling vision to empowering others to do their best work.

Eyal Hamalish is an entrepreneur, activist and executive leadership coach. He joined the School of Life as a founding faculty member in Australia in 2014. Eyal has over 10 years experience working as an engagement and communications consultant for executives of major corporations including BHP Billiton, NAB and AGL. Eyal is an advisor to the Swinburne University of Technology Social Innovation Research Centre and a Board Member of Code for Australia. He has been recognised by the World Economic Forum as a Global Shaper and is a fellow of both the Unreasonable Institute and the Center for Sustainability Leadership.
