The School of Life on Love

Our range of classes and workshops offer individuals a radical new approach to learning. When it comes to relationships, here at The School of Life, we believe that love is a not an emotion to be felt, but a skill to be learnt. Our Love curriculum has been created to help us acquire skills and attitudes that can lead to a new, more hopeful future for love.

Our range of classes and workshops offer individuals a radical new approach to learning. When it comes to relationships, here at The School of Life we believe that love is a not an emotion to be felt, but a skill to be learnt. We expect love to be the source of our greatest joys. But it is also, of course, one of the most reliable routes to misery. Few forms of suffering are as intense as those we experience in relationships. Viewed from the outside, love could be mistaken for a practice focused almost entirely on the generation of despair. That's why we've created a range of classes which tackle some of the thornier issues surrounding relationships, and teach us how to acquire skills and attitudes that can lead to a new, more hopeful future for love.

Our classes on love have been designed for everyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual preference or relationship status. Some people choose to attend as a couple, others prefer to come alone, but all are welcome.

How to Find Love
Choosing a partner is one of the trickiest and most consequential decisions we will ever make. The costs of repeated failure, in terms of distress and wasted time, are immense. All too often our emotions pull us towards hugely problematic characters and dynamics, according to a logic we seldom fully understand. £55 - Book now
How to Make Love Last
The class proposes that we sometimes give up on love too soon. When managed more wisely, the end of love does not have to be inevitable. £55 - Book now
How to Make Love Last
At The School of Life, we don’t believe that love must inevitably fizzle out over time; this happens when it has not been wisely managed. In this class, we cover seven core skills that underpin successful long-term relationships, including how to communicate, how not to sulk, how to navigate conflict through humour, and how to deal with sexual differences and awkward desires. £55 - Book now
Stay or Leave?
This is a class, intended both for people who are single and who are in couples, that explores the question: what is a good enough relationship? £55 - Book now
Stay or Leave?
It can be remarkably hard to know what level of compromise, hard work, difficulty and everyday scratchiness we should accept in love. On the one hand, our culture presents us with seductive images of constant intense love and passion; on the other, we hear reminders that relationships are hard work and that we should keep our expectations in check. £55 - Book now

Making Relationships Work - one-day workshop

For those looking to combine our entire Love curriculum into a single high intensity session, we offer all three classes in workshop form for £150. In most relationships, we are trying to do something enormously difficult without the bare minimum of support necessary. It is not surprising that – very often – we have troubles. In this intensive day of study, we learn how to acquire skills and attitudes that can lead to a new, more hopeful future for love.

Examples of lessons learned during our classes include:

  • That it is normal for love and sex to have a complex connection, and that they may not always belong together.

  • That we are all rather flawed, and accepting this can increase the amount of tolerance and generosity in circulation.

  • That we will never find everything we need in another person, nor they in us - not because of these flaws, but because human nature makes this impossible.

  • That we need to make immense efforts to understand one another.

  • That intuition alone can’t get us to where we need to go.
