The School of Life on Culture

Our societies frequently proclaim their enormous esteem for culture. But what is culture really for? Why should we bother with it, and how can we best draw value from it in the pursuit of more emotionally fulfilled lives? The School of Life have created a range of classes and workshops designed to help us see culture as a resource with which to address the complex agonies of being human.

Our societies frequently proclaim their enormous esteem for culture. Music, film, literature and the visual arts enjoy superlative prestige and are viewed by many as getting close to the meaning of life. But what is culture really for? Why should we bother with it, and how can we best draw value from it in the pursuit of more emotionally fulfilled lives?

Dissatisfaction and desire are central to our lives and have a deep value and importance. But there is also crucial value in knowing how to appreciate what we have - in learning how to feel grateful for what is already to hand. That's why we've created a range of classes and workshops that invite us to see culture as a resource with which to address the complex agonies of being human, helping us to work out - through a process of experience and introspection - what counts as a meaningful life in our eyes.
