How To Be A Better Friend (English)

“Of all the means to insure happiness throughout the whole life, by far the most important is the acquisition of friends.” The Greek philosopher Epicurus spent most of his life thinking about how people can become happy. According to him friendship was essential. Yet friendship isn't always easy. In recent research participants were asked who they considered to be their friends. Only 50% of the people they named also regarded them as friends. Many people that you consider to be your friends probably don’t see you in this way. And vice versa.

The most important cause for this mismatch is confusion about what friendship means. Not necessary, according to another old Greek philosopher, Aristotle. He used a clear classification of friends: friends for pleasure, friends that are useful to us and friends that are there for good. The last category can be regarded as true friendship, but that doesn’t mean the other categories aren’t important. As long as it is clear.

This class explores the insights and advice of a number of key thinkers to look at the limits and perils of friendship, as well as its promise. You will also be asked to take a look at your own social circle and consider what it is that you are looking for in friendship. There is an art to friendship. Aristotle warned: ‘The desire for friendship comes quickly. Friendship does not.”
