The Red Centre: On Humility & Perspective

The Red Centre: On Humility & Perspective

ABOUT THE ART OF TRAVEL SERIES

The Art of Travel takes a philosophical look at the ubiquitous but peculiar activity of travelling ‘for pleasure’. We are inundated with advice on where to travel to; we hear little of why we should go and how we could be more fulfilled doing so. Without anything mystical being meant by it, all of us are involved in one way or another on what could be termed ‘an inner journey’: that is, we’re trying to develop in particular ways. We might be searching for how to be calmer or how to find a way to rethink our goals, we might long for a greater sense of confidence or an escape from debilitating feelings of envy. Travel, when approached the right way, can play a critical role in helping us to grow into better versions of ourselves.

Ideally, where we travel to should help us with our attempts at personal growth. The outer journey should assist us with the inner one. In part, this requires us to look at the globe in a new way. Every destination we might visit contains within it qualities that could conceivably support some move or other on a person’s inner journey. There are places that could help with shyness and others with anxiety. Some places might be good at reducing egoism and others might be good for helping us think more clearly about the future. The School of Life and Intrepid Travel have come together to offer a unique travel experience to nurture, console and provide guidance on the art of living. Hosted by experienced Intrepid guides and TSOL faculty members, participants should expect a unique exploration of both the physical and psychological worlds.

THE RED CENTRE - ON HUMILITY AND PERSPECTIVE

The Australian desert rehearses in grand terms a lesson that ordinary life typically introduces without warning; that the universe is mightier than we are, that we are temporary and have no alternative but to accept the limitations on our will. The lesson written into the unending night sky and the red sand is that we are minute and entirely dispensable in the greater scheme of things. This notion, though challenging, may see us come away not crushed but relieved and humbled as, for a little while, our own lives seem blissfully unimportant. We may even be inspired by what lies beyond us; privileged to be subjects to such majestic necessities.

The desert moves us to acknowledge limitations that we would otherwise encounter with anxiety or anger in the ordinary flow of events. Human life is overwhelming, but it is the vast spaces of nature that perhaps provide us with the finest and most respectful reminder of all the wonder and beauty that surrounds and exceeds us.

Join us for an intimate travel experience exploring the value of humility and perspective by confronting the power of the Australian desert. This tour has been designed to help you step back and think differently about the bigger picture, in conversation with other curious and open minded travel partners.

ABOUT INTREPID TRAVEL

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1989. A company that began with two bearded backpackers, a typewriter and a kitchen table now leads 100,000 travellers across the globe each year.

And although Intrepid is a bit larger these days – with 1,000 local staff based around the world and over 800 different trips across every continent (not to mention multiple kitchen tables) – their mission remains the same. They still get a kick out of responsible travel, small groups and very (very) big adventures.
