Art As Therapy

Art As Therapy

The Art as Therapy Guided Tour aims to provoke a rethinking of some crucial assumptions about what a visit to the art gallery is for. In late 2013, the renowned philosophers and authors Alain de Botton and John Armstrong released their much-acclaimed book, Art As Therapy. In it they raise the question of what the purpose of art really is, and propose that art can be looked to and enjoyed for its powerfully therapeutic effect.

The Art as Therapy Guided Tours seek to help us develop a deeper understanding of art and of ourselves in equal measure. The tours are an intimate experience in which you will be guided through unique interpretations of selected pieces in the National Gallery of Victoria’s permanent collection, and asked to share your insights and responses to the selection in conversation with other participants.

The tours will provide fascinating insight for those who are familiar with art as well as those who are new to the subject.

Our range of tours take groups on walking experiences, in galleries and on the street. Explore and observe interesting landscapes in an experience developed to challenge you to think deeply about the issues that matter most, and provided with a space to share your thoughts, ideas and insights with other curious, open-minded individuals.

“It was marvellous.  I have visited art galleries many, many, times and viewed the art-work presented by looking at the paintings, but this is the first time that I have ever been encouraged to look into the work of art and react to it.  I found it a marvellous, enriching, experience and probably shall review works of art entirely differently in the future.”
