Join us for a unique meeting of minds. Editor of The Lady Rachel Johnson meets her hero: footballer and broadcaster Gary Lineker.
Throughout 2017 The School of Life will host a unique series of life events called HEROES, in which we explore how people influence and learn from one another. We invite one of the central figures of our times to nominate a personal hero from a different field – a cultural icon whose work they have longed admired. We bring the pair together on stage for a unique and rich conversation.
Gary Lineker left school with four O-levels and a report card claiming that he ‘concentrates too much on football’ and would never make a living from it. Three decades later his record-breaking goal-scoring for England and reputation for fair play have made him one of the most respected sportsmen in public life – a role model both for those who remember his career and the pitch and who know him as the face of Match of the Day.
Famous for never receiving a yellow or red card in a match, Lineker remains a principled figure in public life – incurring the wrath of The Sun for supporting refugees and the independence of the judiciary. Join us as we find out more about the life and opinions of an unusually eloquent footballer: from his candid views on how the beautiful game has changed since his heyday to why England never wins in international tournaments.
Discover why editor, columnist and novelist Rachel Johnson has invited Lineker to The School of Life as her personal hero.
