HEROES: Harriet Harman meets Jo Brand

HEROES: Harriet Harman meets Jo Brand

Join us for a unique meeting of minds. Politician Harriet Harman interviews comedian, actress and former psychiatric nurse Jo Brand.

Throughout 2017 The School of Life will host a unique series of life events called HEROES, in which we explore how people influence and learn from one another. We invite one of the central figures of our times to nominate a personal hero from a different field – a cultural icon whose work they have longed admired from afar. Then we bring the pair together on stage for a unique and rich conversation.

When Harriet Harman entered parliament in 1982 the House of Commons was 97% male. Since then she has tirelessly championed women’s rights and female representation, changing the law on domestic violence and introducing the Equality Act. She raised three children in a culture utterly hostile to family life – overcoming discrimination to become one of the most respected and influential politicians of her generation. Perhaps more than any other MP, she knows what it means to reach the top of a man’s world.

It’s something she has in common with comedian Jo Brand. In her very first live gig in the 1980s she faced down abuse from male hecklers who took an effrontery to her gender and size. Now she is one of our best loved comics: a feted live stand-up, regular guest of QI, Have I Got News for You and Would I Lie to You, the writer and star of numerous solo shows, and the bestselling author of many novels and memoirs. Before entering comedy she worked for a decade as a psychiatric nurse – and her knowledge of mental illness and healthcare continue to inform her work, including her poignant and brutal NHS satire Getting On.

Now these two influential and accomplished figures will meet for the first time, bringing together the country’s political and cultural worlds for a unique conversation about what it means to make a mark as a woman in 21st century Britain
