An Urban Gardening Holiday
Saturday 25 April 2009, 10:00 - 21:00
Whether you own a window box, a backyard or a whole allotment, are naturally green-fingered or prone to strangle any plant you touch, join us for a completely different kind of gardening holiday.
Emma Townshend, The Independent on Sunday’s gardening columnist, will guide us through a rarely seen side of London, opening doors to a wealth of secret outside spaces on rooftops, down alleyways and inside office blocks. She’ll demonstrate essential urban skills such as how to grow salad in a window-box and make garden furniture from remaindered building supplies.
We’ll also be joined by legendary guerrilla gardener Richard Reynolds who’ll open your eyes to the neglected flower-beds, concrete planters sprouting litter and empty tree pits just waiting to be transformed. Expect to work hard as we turn a patch of orphaned land into a public pleasure garden.
Throughout the day, you’ll discover how to live off the land (even if that land is in Zone 1), visit the chefs at Konstam who are known for sourcing all their produce within the M25, and finish the day with an amazing home-grown feast.
An Urban Gardening Holiday is offered as part of Slow Down London (24 April to 4 May 2009) - a project to inspire Londoners to find a saner pace of life and to appreciate the world around us.
