How does it work?

The practicalities

Most experts will expect to meet with you to talk about the chosen field of expertise. These meetings are generally an informal chat in a mutually convenient location. However, there are no strict rules about where and when you meet, what you do or how you do it. You might want to walk down Oxford Street camera in hand with our photography expert, cycle leisurely around Victoria Park with our cycling expert, or learn the art of Slow on a rush hour bus journey with our expert in slowness.  We encourage both you and the expert to make suggestions.

Some of our experts can also do consultations by phone or email. Others are available to do public talks or meet a larger group. There are many feasible ways to meet; we will do our best to arrange an appropriate one.

What to expect

You and your chosen expert will want to make the most of your meeting; a certain amount of preparation is therefore a good idea. As well as choosing where and when the meeting will take place, the reasons why are crucial. By letting your expert know why you want to meet them and what you want to talk about they will have a chance to prepare in advance.  You might then be surprised by a prop, come away with a reading list or be provided with some useful contact details.

Costs

Meeting an expert costs from £50 per hour. Rates for experts to visit businesses start at £75 per hour. The School of Life team will confirm the rate for your chosen expert before you book.
