FAMILY
How were you shaped by your childhood?
How should you handle your parents?
Why are some families are happier than others?
This is a course for everyone who is curious about the impact our families have on us.
The poet Philip Larkin knew that mum and dad might fuck you up, but he refused to believe that anyone could do anything about this inter-generational misery. At The School of Life, we’re no less realistic, but we’re far more hopeful. We invite you to sign up for a course that explores the extent to which understanding our past can help us make a success of our future.
We guide you through the most important ideas about family found in psychotherapy, sociology, history, photography, film and literature. We discuss what makes families happy but also what can cause them to become pits of claustrophobia and resentment. We explore how family dynamics change over time. And we celebrate the possibilities for shaping a life, and perhaps a family, of our own.
