Futerra on Global Salvation
11.30am, 11 October 2009 The School of Life, 70 Marchmont St, London WC1N 1AB
In this unique double-act, Ed Gillespie and Solitaire Townsend take to the pulpit to teach us how to save the world....literally.
Green may be the colour of the Futerra religion but their style is far from pious. Sustainability, as they preach it, is technology fancying, gadget-loving, carbon-neutral and super-sexy. So forget the sanctimonious finger-wagging in sandals and socks you may be used to from the green camp; this sermon will be anything but a Luddite get together of beard-stroking yogurt weavers.
No one likes to feel guilty about their eco-sins, so most of us sweep our dark little secrets (cheap flights, plastic bags, solo car journeys) under the carpet and ignore them. “Confess and Progress” urge Ed and Soli, who’ll be bringing their Earthly Sins Confessional Booth (see picture on the right) to Conway Hall.
Of course there’s a serious and urgent message behind Futerra’s playful style and you should expect to have fear about the world’s ecological crisis struck deep into your heart. Salvation is possible, we’ll learn, but only if we adhere to the essential eco-commandments that can bring about global absolution through individual and collective action.
Ed Gillespie and Solitaire Townsend are co-founders and directors of Futerra Sustainable Communications.
