Cathy Haynes
Cathy is The School of Life’s Curator of Public Programmes. She’s also a founder member of our faculty, leading classes and an experimental walking tour of the creative process. Cathy is a curator, writer and artist. When she’s not at The School, Cathy is currently hunting out stories for her solo project No Such Place: a partial history of imaginary maps (first shown at Derby QUAD, 2010). This exhibition collects together real maps that incorporate an element of fantasy: phantom islands in official sea charts, an unexplained figure in the first accurate moon map, an elephant hidden in the contours of an army survey. Cathy was recently Curator for Art on the Underground where she produced Michael Landy’s Acts of Kindness (Central line, 2011). Before that she was Head of Interaction at Artangel, where she initiated and co-produced the Nights of London series of artists' commissions. These include Sukhdev Sandhu's nocturnal journal Night Haunts (Verso, 2007) and Janice Kerbel's radio play Nick Silver Can't Sleep performed by Rufus Sewell and Fiona Shaw (BBC Radio 3, 2006). Cathy has a broad academic background and is a strong believer in the value of interdisciplinary thinking. She has a BA (1st) in social and political sciences from Cambridge University, and an MA (dist.) in culture studies and MPhil in history both from Goldsmiths University of London. Cathy is regularly a visiting speaker for cultural institutions who’ve included D&AD; the Royal College of Art; the Hayward, Whitechapel and Serpentine Galleries; and the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. |
